More equal societies work better for everyone
Newsletter of October 8th 2011
Hi “Closing the Gap” Supporters,
This newsletter is mostly about getting the message out there. We will be successful only if we can get the support of a large number of people and because we do not have the funds for large scale advertising etc the only way we can progress is through the efforts of you all, currently over 300.
E mails to Friends. After a really good start in building support for this project, the growth over recent weeks has been disappointing. The project will succeed only if we can show the politicians that we have very large numbers of supporters, enough to make them, regardless of their party, adopt the policy that reducing the income gap for New Zealanders must under-pin all their work. A few weeks ago, we asked you all to e mail those on your “address books” (being selective) asking them to support the project. We know from the experience of some that this process works. All of you, please find the time in your busy lives to spread the word. This project is too important to fail. We know that there are other distractions right now—go the All Blacks–but the statistics on the health of our society are not getting any better. We live in a great country but it could be so much better and we should not have to put up with guilty consciences about child poverty, drug and alcohol addictions, obesity….. so please do your bit. There is a sample e mail on the website that you might like to use, modified if you wish. There are some other ways in which you can help below.
“Business Cards”. On the website under MORE INFO there is a page of “business cards” you can use. Just print off a couple of pages either in colour or black and white, cut them up and put them in your purse or wallet. I find them very useful when you are talking to somebody about the project and you tell them about the website. This a good time to give them the card with the website address on it.
Letterbox Drop. Also on the website under MORE INFO there are four different styles of “letterbox drops”. Choose which one you like, print some off either in colour or black and white and distribute them around your neighbourhood.
Facebook & Twitter sites. We now have both of these operating from the website. Please have a look at them, express likes and make posts on facebook and become a follower, post tweets, replies and retweets on Twitter whenever you like something expressed there or you have something to say that supports the project. Even if you are not familiar with these forms of communication, for this project be a part of them. They are important means of contact for a large number of people.
The Website. Make it part of your daily routine to visit the site and then Facebook and Twitter. We are putting new material on the site almost every day. Morgan and Guthrie, and Gould in the NZ Herald make very interesting reading and Jeremy Sachs in this weeks Time Magazine is quite fascinating(sorry I couldn’t post the whole article, you will have to brouse in a bookstore). If you have opinion or research articles that you think worthy of publication please send them to me at [email protected] We are also looking for a better photograph for the front page of the website. If you have one that you think better reflects our project andNew Zealand, please e mail it to me.
Local Groups. If you would like to set up a local group please let me know and I will e mail you the list of supporters in your area.
Thank you for reading this but more importantly do your bit to promote the project. Get it out there and we will make a difference
